Nexon customers get good game Karma

Nexon America’s widely distributed prepaid Nexon Game Cards will soon be replaced by Karma Koin cards starting in early September. Karma Koin cards work the same way as Nexon Game Cards, and will be available at more than 70,000 retail stores in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Customers will be able to choose from prepaid amounts of $10, $25 and $50 (USD or local equivalents).

Players will start seeing Karma Koin cards at the same retail stores that currently carry Nexon Game Cards beginning in early September. Customers will be able to redeem the cards for NX, Nexon’s in-game currency used in its games’ shops. Nexon will continue to accept Nexon Game Cards, though retailers will begin phasing them out during the transition period to the Karma Koin cards.

For every Karma Koin card redeemed, Nexon will donate a percentage of that amount to charity.

The Nexon Game Card was the first prepaid game card in the market when it was introduced in North America in 2007, and allowed players to purchase in-game items from Nexon games without needing a credit card. The Nexon Game Cards became extremely successful for Nexon, with nearly 5 million cards purchased in 2009 and 2010.

“The prepaid game card has been a foundation of our extremely successful business model in North America and paved the way for countless other game companies to follow suit,” said Nexon America CEO Daniel Kim. “The Karma Koin cards will continue this success, allowing non-credit card users to enjoy our game enhancements while having the added benefit of knowing that each purchase will result in funds going directly to charity.”

Ultimately, Nexon’s Karma Koin program will be available as a payment platform for other online game developers and merchants who are seeking a secure, widely-distributed way of providing users a way to safely make online transactions. Additionally, this will allow game companies to enter other territories, such as countries in Latin America, where use of credit cards are not as common in North America.

Nexon America will provide additional details as the Karma Koin cards become available during the remainder of 2011. For more information on Nexon America’s Karma Koins, go to:
