Soma Games Releases Minecraft Adventure Map of Redwall Abbey

NEWBERG, Ore — Aug 12, 2013 — Soma Games, the gaming arm of the award-winning development company Code-Monkey’s, today released AbbeyCraft, a Minecraft adventure map recreation of Redwall Abbey, the famed setting from Brian Jacques’ best-selling children’s fantasy book series Redwall. AbbeyCraft is the precursor release to Redwall: The Warrior Reborn, the first officially licensed game adaptation of the hugely popular Redwall series currently in development. The project successfully raised its initial funding through Kickstarter and continues to crowdsource game development thru active participation from Redwall fans and Minecraft users.

“One of the most important aspects of AbbeyCraft and The Warrior Reborn is that they reflect the spirit of Redwall Abbey – and that means community,” said Chris Skaggs, CTO of Soma Games and the lead designer for the game. “Developing a Minecraft map and server as the first step of the adventure game allows us to create ways for Redwall fans and the Minecraft community to actively participate and evolve the game in a meaningful and authentic way.”

AbbeyCraft is the first phase in the release of Redwall: The Warrior Reborn, a 3D progressive adventure game that will bring the vivid world to life through exploration, puzzles and collaborative gameplay that is as much about the geography and the buildings from the story as it is about interacting with the characters themselves.  AbbeyCraft allows users to explore Redwall Abbey and the surrounding Mossflower countryside settings from the books including St. Ninian's Church and Gingivere's Farm.  In addition to the main adventure story, the map covers sixteen square kilometers of surrounding countryside and features dozens of side-quests, parkour trails and secret doors to keep the player engaged for hours.

Users with access to a private AbbeyCraft Minecraft server will receive hints and clues, early game announcements and a channel through which to solicit and share feedback. Soma Games is also actively soliciting feedback from Redwall fans and the Minecraft community at relevant online forums and message boards including the official forum, RedwallAbbey.com.

Soma Games is partnering closely with Sean Rubin, who has been the official Redwall artist for several years and is the unofficial curator of the canon. His participation will ensure The Warrior Reborn conveys not only the broad strokes of the books, but also the fine details.

Soma Games utilized funds and community feedback from a recent successful Kickstarter project to develop AbbeyCraft. The company plans to pursue future crowdfunding and other funding models to further advance the game’s development. Additionally, Soma Games was recently accepted into Praxis Labs’ Business Accelerator Program, which supports entrepreneurs who are compelled by their faith to advance the common good. Soma plans to utilize the program’s world-class network and resources for development of the Redwall game.

AbbeyCraft is now available for download at several online locations including www.minecraftmaps.com and http://www.somagames.com/redwall/redwall-abbeycraft.php. The Minecraft client is available at http://www.minecraft.net for PC, Mac, or Linux and is required to play AbbeyCraft.
