SHEFFIELD, U.K. – March 25, 2013 – Tangentix Ltd , a leading company focused on compression technology and new discovery models for games, today announced the completion of a $2.1 Million funding round. The funds will enable the company to implement its growth plans and deploy a new paradigm for game discovery, which will debut at next week’s GDC in San Francisco. The funding was led by EV Group Ltd, a previous seed investor in the company. Other investors in the round included RisingStars Growth Fund II, ParkWalk Advisors, and Finance Yorkshire (Equity & Seedcorn Funds).
The funding marks a major milestone for Tangentix as we work to implement our compression technology in multiple AAA titles, and deploy a new paradigm for PC and Mac game discovery,” said Edward French, CEO of Tangentix Ltd. “We believe the growing size of games is a real challenge for publishers and gamers, and next week we’ll be able to show the world what we’ve developed that addresses the problem, and will get people playing traditional AAA games in new ways.”
Tangentix started as a spin-out from the University of Bradford, based on new math to represent 3D objects. Since then, the company has developed a suite of tools and patents to cover different aspects of compressing all of the main components of a video game, including the 3D meshes, textures, sounds and video. The result is games that are typically one third the size of the originals.
The Tangentix compression technology:
Compresses games to be one third of the normal size: so a 20 GB game is reduced to around 7 GB.
Works on slow connections (down to 256kb)
Is high-definition – no artifacts or loss of fidelity
Makes the experience of downloading AAA games faster and easier for players
Reduces the publishers’ costs of game distribution
Founded in 2009, Tangentix is focused on creating and refining its advanced compression technology for videogames. The company offers publishers, game portals and digital distribution systems the ability to deliver a more compact product that retains all of its quality, and doesn’t require any development or support from the partner. Tangentix is currently working on a PC game discovery solution that will enable AAA games to be experienced in new ways. The company is based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and currently scaling its team internationally. For more information, please visit: www.tangentix.com
