Top Ten Most Addictive Video Games Revealed

The results of a new study have revealed the console titles gamers feel are most addictive, while also showing that two thirds of gaming fans claim to feel ‘addicted’ to playing video games.

The study, conducted by video game price comparison and marketplace website, aimed to discover more about the gaming habits of British gamers. 1, 231 self-confessed ‘gamers’ subsequently took part in the study, answering questions surrounding their playing habits.

Those taking part in the study about addictive video games were also asked, “Do you feel that you’re ‘addicted’ to playing video games?” to which just under two-thirds, 64%, answered “yes.” Just a third, 31%, gave a definite ‘no’ answer, whilst the remaining 5% stated that it ‘depends on the title’.

Those who answered ‘yes’ or ‘depends on the title’ were then asked to elaborate on how video games fit in with their everyday life. According to the results of the study, two fifths, 42%, of gamers admitted that they often missed out on social occasions in order to play video games. Further to this, 82% also admitted that they regularly missed out on sleep as a direct result of playing video games.

When asked, “Do you think you could easily give up playing video games?” just over half, 51%, of total respondents answered ‘no.’

The study aimed to find out which games on the market have proven to be ‘most addictive’. Gaming fans taking part in the study were asked to state which games they had felt ‘most addicted to’ when playing, and were able to choose multiple answers.

According to the study, the top 10 ‘most addictive console video games’ were as follows:

1)      Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 73% of gamers who said they’d played said they felt ‘addicted’ to it

2)      Skyrim: The Elder Scrolls V – 70%

3)      Halo 3 – 68%

4)      Final Fantasy VII – 63%

5)      Grand Theft Auto IV – 58%

6)      Oblivion: The Elder Scrolls IV – 56%

7)      The Sims – 55%

8)      Red Dead Redemption – 46%

9)      FIFA 2012 – 42%

10)   Tetris – 39%

Simon Kilby, Founder of, commented on the findings:

“I’ve often put important things off to continue playing my favourite games, and although this may not count as an addiction in a medical sense, I’ve certainly felt with certain titles that I couldn’t wait to finish what I was doing to get back to playing. I’m only surprised that Skyrim didn’t top the list, because I don’t know a single player who hasn’t become entirely engrossed with the game.’

He continued:

“Looking over the list of console games, it’s not hard to see how people are so easily drawn into them. Although a number of the top ten have open-ended multiplayer modes that could keep you playing for hours on end, it’s great to see titles like Final Fantasy VII and Tetris in there, which are clearly loved for other reasons.”
