WATERLOO, Ontario – August 5, 2013 – Ehtonal, Inc. is pleased to announce the beginning of an open beta period for Veemix, a new software tool that makes it possible for gamers to create and share interactive soundtracks using tracks from their own music library. This plug-in for the popular Unity game engine allows developers to offer their players a new level of customization and interaction. Veemix gives players the power to play the role of DJ for their game, and to share their creative genius online at veemix.com.
Veemix technology integrates seamlessly with traditional game development and production workflow. Developers use the plug-in within the Unity editor to tag in-game events with keywords, "spotting" the gameplay just as they would when working with a composer. When a player uncovers a tagged event during, a pop-up menu allows them to choose music from their own library as appropriate to the provided keyword tags. “This is the next generation of personalizing games: it lets you recreate those moments of synchronicity when the music and game just line up perfectly,” said Chief Creative Officer Karen Collins.
Gamers love to listen to their own music when playing a game, filling countless online forums with passionate discussions of which music makes the best soundtrack for their favorite games. Many game platforms do allow players to mute the original in-game music in favor of their own selections, but the existing approach uses this external music as “background music” without any meaningful integration with the game experience – the music will not change in response to gameplay. If the player has put on some mellow ambient music to fit the slow pace of exploration at the beginning of a level, a sudden enemy encounter and ensuing battle sequence will be stripped of its intended emotional impact.
Veemix offers a unique and powerful solution. It allows players to listen to their favorite music throughout the game without sacrificing the emotional impact of appropriate, story-based musical transitions. And going beyond the single-player experience, the Veemix website provides a social networking venue where players can share, discuss, and rate their playlists.
Veemix is a release from our company, Ehtonal, Inc., which has produced SoundSign deaf-accessible gaming, and experimental games in 3D virtual environments. We will be presenting Veemix at UNITE 2013, Unity’s premier developer’s conference, taking place in Vancouver, Canada, August 28 – 30.
