Virtual Toys: Best Art Award

16.07.2009 - During the last Gamelab, Interactive Leisure International Trade Fair, Virtual Toys has received the Best Art Award, for its videogame Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam. The graphic potential of the new consoles allows the player to enjoy more realistic images in videogames, but the player is not always looking for reality simulation. Some of the recent, most popular games, using less sophisticated technology, rely on impressive and different techniques, which usually are the key to their success. The jury, formed by sector specialists, valued the fun graphic concept of the game, colorful and very well adapted to the genre and target audience. For this reason they chose the Spanish studio’s product for the Best Art Award, receiving the valued“flea”, the recently assigned symbol of Gamelab’s Awards, as a tribute to“bugaboo” (The Flea), the mythical, internationally acclaimed, Spanish videogame for the Sinclair Spectrum.

Fabriciano Bayo, CEO of Virtual Toys, received the prize.“When we developed Yummy Yummy, one of our main goals was to make a game graphically impressive and attractive, based on the type of player we targeted. It’s a great pleasure that Yummy Yummy’s artistic quality is recognized by specialists, this means we have achieved our first goal”.

For the second year in a row, the studio from Madrid has been award wiiner at the sector’s main trade fair, giving them great expectations for their next launchings, such as the arcade,“Spaceball Revolution”, presented for the first time to the audience at Gamelab,

The ceremony, hosted by the actor and comedian Javier Veiga (El Club de la Comedia) and hostess Mª José Suárez, counted with the presence of the most relevant people in the sector, all of them participants at Gamelab.

VIRTUAL TOYS AT GAMELAB

Virtual Toys, has been present at Gamelab participating in two round tables and the presentation of the product. On July 1st, Jesús Iglesias, creative director of Virtual Toys, discussed, at the round table on the“Evolution of videogame’s production model” the production model of the studio and the changes experienced in the more than the 14 years he has been working in the sector.

During that afternoon, Fabriciano Bayo, CEO of Virtual Toys, participated in the round table“Venture Capital investment for videogame development”, offering his particular vision on the pros and cons of the entrance of Venture Capital in videogame companies and how these can help and effect their functioning,

On the second day, Jesús Iglesias together with Santiago Cobo, producer, hosted the presentation to the participants of the studio’s latest title:“Spaceball Revolution, reinventing arcade”, a project that will be marketed soon through Nintendo’s on-line distribution channel, WiiWareTM.

Spaceball Revolution is a puzzle arcade, full of innovative concepts which allow the player to enjoy one of the most addictive experiences in recent times. This product was present in beta version at the“WiiWare Media Summit” held at Nintendo’s headquarters last April and was extremely well received, as it was in Gijón.

Gamelab, the Interactive Leisure International Market Fair, has celebrated its fifth edition, in La Laboral, City of Culture in Gijón (Asturias, Spain), July 1 thru 3. It was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture,Ángeles González Sinde, who defended videogames as a culture, equaling their value to that of cinema or fine arts, considering them as an art gaining importance day by day. She also demonstrated her commitment to strengthen the national videogame industry, by boosting public financing and the private sector support. Together with the important representation of the main players in the national videogame sector there were leading international exectutives of the industry, such as Ian Livingston (EIDOS), Chris Hecker (Spore), Bryan Neide (Director General de EA Games), Chulki Choi from NHN Corporation or Richard Owens, Director of the Copyright E-Commerce, Technology and Management Division of the World Intellectual Property Organization… who offered their point of view of the actual interactive leisure situation through a series of debates and conferences

ABOUT THE AWARDS

During this second edition of the awards, Gamelab presented a new trophy, from now on known as PULGA (Flea) in honor of“The flea” or“Bugaboo”, considered as the first Spanish videogame, developed by Paco Suárez at Indescomp in 1983. The trophy has been designed exclusively for Gamelab by Nikodemo Animation studio, responsible for the popular animation series“Calico Electrónico”.

The jury was composed of specialists that work daily with information about the sector, such as the trade fair’s Director, Ivan Fernández Lobo, Manuel González, writer of“Tras la Dos”,“ZoomNet” and TVE, Carmen Jané, specialized writer of“El Periodico de Catalunya”, David Martínez, editor-in–chief of“Hobby Consolas”, Nacho Ortiz, editor-in–chief of“Meristation.com” and David Sanz, director of“Marca Player”.
