For the second year, Wacom, the world’s leading manufacturer of pen tablets, interactive pen displays, and digital interface solutions, has teamed up with the University of Abertay Dundee to form a partnership around the institution’s renowned gaming development competition– Dare to be Digital. The partnership positions Wacom as a lead sponsor of the event, as well as running a parallel competition called Dare with Bamboo, inviting aspiring game developers to create a game for Wacom’s Bamboo Dock.
Dare with Bamboo Competition
Wacom’s Dare with Bamboo competition invites students to create a game that is ideal to play with the Bamboo interactive tablet. The winning games will be available to download via the Bamboo Dock– an icon that sits on the desktop of a computer and acts as a gateway to an array of applications. Entrants will have until the 15th July to submit their game, with the registration period closing on the 15th June.
Five winning games will be selected in early August, with the first prize standing at£1,000. The winner will be chosen by a special jury including Brian Baglow, head of Interactive Entertainment at Revolver PR, and Neil Holmes, producer at Blitz Games Studios.
Last year, Mark Jawdoszak won the competition with his interactive game Skin Ink. Players use the Bamboo to draw the outlines of a tattoo or even generate their own tattoos. The game is sensitive to the amount of pressure applied by the Bamboo pen. Since winning the competition, Mark continues to work with Wacom to develop a second version of his game and provide feedback and consultancy to Wacom on various projects. Wacom foresee the relationship continuing in the future, as Mark undertakes new projects with the pen tablet manufacturer.
The Bamboo range of interactive input devices merges multi-touch functionality with pen tablet technology into a single device. Supporting the Bamboo tablet range is the Bamboo Dock. Users can play games, sketch, add notes to documents, doodle on photos and much more with the Dock apps. The Bamboo Dock has been downloaded onto 500,000 computers across Europe.

About Dare to be Digital
Dare to be Digital is a video game development competition for students at universities and colleges of art throughout the UK and across Europe. Teams of extremely talented students (usually a mix of artists, programmers and audio students) assemble at Abertay University for nine weeks over the summer to develop prototype video games, whilst receiving mentoring from the industry.
Wacom is also providing technical sponsorship of the competition in the form of providing the 15 student teams with Intuos4 M tablets to develop their video games. The Intuos4 is the ideal pen tablet for creating digital content. The three highest scoring teams are awarded£2,500 and also invited to the BAFTA Video Games Awards to compete for the coveted“Ones to Watch Award”.
