Words of Oz is a word game in which the players take turns to create poetic phrases. The players compete to get the highest score, and at the same time they create a beautiful picture together, to be shared on social networks. The game will be released online and for tablets in 2013.
“This game is for anyone who enjoys playing with words”, says producer Karin Ryding, "and word-nerds will love it!".
The game is for two players taking turns, similar to a board game. By placing words between picture tiles you create a beautiful image together, with the tiles as islands and poetic phrases running between them. The players are challenged to include certain words or to build phrases in a special way, and they compete to get the highest score.
Words of Oz is developed by Swedish game studio Ozma Games - < http://www.ozmagames.com> - founded by Karin Ryding (Producer and Creative Director) and Bobbi Augustine Sand (Game Designer and Art
Director) in 2006.
Since the start Ozma have been working on a wide variety of innovative projects, such as the mobile game Urblove < http://www.ozma.se/2010/05/06/urblove/> , the “opinion machine”
Tyckomaskinen < http://www.ozma.se/2012/11/05/tyckomaskinen/> and the transmedial film project Granny’s Dancing on the Table < http://granniverse.com/>. In 2011, Ozma’s gamified platform for change processes, WeProject, was chosen by the Swedish Institute for an exhibition of 20 of the most innovative Swedish products, and the exhibition is currently touring around the world.
For Ozma, Words of Oz is the starting point for a new direction for the company, and part of a larger vision.
“We want to make games that give the players a sense of purpose”, Bobbi says.
“All too often people think they’re wasting time if they play games. We want to change that by adding creative, social and spiritual elements to our games, such as strong symbolic imagery to inspire creativity.
Playing games should be fun but also rewarding in a deeper sense.”
Next week Karin is going to San Francisco and GDC, Game Developers Conference, to show the game to publishers, investors and press.
“We’re often told that this game is quite unique - maybe by the combination of words and images, or by the fact that we’re inspired by board games and fridge magnets. It’s a contemplative game, that’s fits well within the ‘slow movement’ ”.
Words of Oz will be released online as an open beta in May. Apps for iPad and Android tablets are scheduled soon after.
