Whilst the anticipation for PS3 in Europe continues to grow ahead of its launch on March 23rd, Sony and Sega are celebrating a major milestone with next-gen brawler Virtua Fighter 5 claiming the number one spot in the Japanese games charts.
GamesRadar reports that Virtua Fighter 5 is not only PS3’s first number one game since its launch last November – it’s also the first PS3 title to trouble the top ten and challenge Nintendo’s current monopoly on the Japanese market.
Despite Sega’s achievement, Nintendo still boasts seven titles in the top ten including the likes of Wii Sports, Wii Play and New Super Mario Bros. Capcom, however, will be delighted to see Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a title that it is publishing in Japan, claim sixth spot in the chart.
In the hardware market, Sony’s PS3 shifted 23,000 units last week, some five times the number of Xbox 360 consoles sold. Nintendo once again outdid all the opposition, though, shifting 78,000 Wii consoles.
