Tesco clamps down on free 360 blaggers

Wednesday, 21st February 2007 at 1:00 pm

Supermarket colossus Tesco has scrapped its ‘return and refund’ policy after enterprising gamers managed to get hold of free Xbox 360s.

360 Gamer reports that from February 26th Tesco will no longer be honouring its promise to give overcharged customers a full refund and allow them to keep their purchase, because of abuse to the system. The move comes after crafty web forumites started sharing pricing information online whenever a product’s price was listed incorrectly.

This led to hoardes of gamers heading down to selected stores listing 360 premium bundles as £297.81, which then show up at the till as £299.97. Under the terms of the policy, it meant they got their 360 for free – and went on to tell others on the web, causing a flood of other gamers to snap up their free console.

Other items affected in the offer have included DVD, frozen foods and mobile phones. Tesco blamed the closing of the offer on a ‘small minority’ of customers exploiting it.
