God of War: Chains of Olympus

Those Greek Gods are pesky little blighters. Not content with throwing lightning bolts from the sky, they also like to provoke wars, crush opponents and create hideous minions to do their bidding.

Which all makes for a cracking game of course, and that’s exactly what happened when the original God of War surfaced in 2005.

The critical acclaim that surrounded the first iteration (and its sequel) was such that every PS2 owner worth his salt had to own it.

The title won countless awards, and IGN dubbed it ‘the greatest PlayStation 2 game of all time’.

God of War: Chains of Olympus is all set to follow in the original’s footsteps, having enjoyed acclaim in the US, and certainly looks the part with stunning visuals and special effects.

The story takes place prior to the events of the first game, and sees protagonist Kratos face off against the most feared creatures from Greek Mythology. The world has been plunged into darkness, the Gods have been rendered powerless, and Kratos must choose between his own personal redemption and saving the world from imminent destruction.

Developer Ready at Dawn Studios has successfully transferred the most impressive elements of God of War onto the handheld. The most notable of which is the fluid combat, which has been upgraded with a host of new brutal moves and epic set pieces.

The traditional exploration elements are also present and correct, with a labyrinth of challenging puzzles inter-woven into the game’s story.

However, Chains of Olympus is more than just the third game in a successful franchise. It is already garnering a reputation as the greatest game on the PSP (see box, right), and pushes the system to its limits. Considering its massive fan base, it’s a safe bet that this one will hack its way off retail shelves.
