It’s strange to think that just a few years ago, Assassin’s Creed was a risky new IP. Now it’s a blockbuster franchise, with not only sequels, but spin-off titles as well.
As the lack of Roman numerals denotes, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is not the third instalment in the overall series, but rather a follow-up to last year’s best-selling Assassin’s Creed II.
Players reprise the role of hooded Italian assassin Ezio as his struggles pit him against the powerful Templar Order. In Brotherhood, he must journey to Rome and strike the Order where they are strongest – and he won’t be going alone.
The Brotherhood suffix alludes to his new role as leader over a motley band of assassins. Gamers can recruit, train and call upon a colourful cast of killers, deploying them around the city as they see fit in order to accomplish Ezio’s goals.
Once again, players must use a mixture of stealth, parkour and cunning weaponry – such as poison darts and hidden guns – to access and assassinate their target. Key members of the enemy factions need to be taken out in order to shift the balance of power in Rome.
Brotherhood is also notable for having the first multiplayer mode of the series. Gamers choose their assassin – each of which has a different signature weapon and special move – and stalk their online prey to prove who is the greatest predator of all.
The game is Ubisoft’s biggest release of the year, and has already been subtly marketed to the public. With more direct TV ads already appearing on multiple channels, expect promotions behind the game to ramp up as November 19th approaches, guaranteeing Brotherhood will live up to the legacy of its predecessors.
