Perfect Weather. Tranquil beaches. Beautiful sunsets. And Zombies. Billy Langsworthy visits Dead Island.
Zombies have never felt more alive thanks to a range of games, films and TV shows focusing on our cousins from beyond the grave.
The latest zombie apocalypse to hit consoles is Dead Island, which swaps the genre’s usual desolate urban sprawls for the luxury beaches.
The sun, sea, and sand of this holiday destination has now been replaced with blood, guts and limbs after an epidemic transforms the island into an zombie apocalypse with deckchairs. Players step into the shoes of a guest at the five star Royal Palms Resort overrun with undead.
The game features a four player co-op mode, allowing gamers to drop in and out of the action. The characters who find themselves immune to the epidemic include Xian Mei, a former employee of the hotel and Sam B, a Chesney Hawkes character living off the success of a one hit wonder.
Sand, sea and severed heads
The game allows players to experience first person combat across locations ranging from the hotel to more mountainous terrain. Enemies explode and leak bile in a number of different ways thanks to a unique damage system giving detailed gore with every kill.
Gamers can make their character more unique through Dead Island’s character development elements including an XP system and skill tree. Players will have to use anything they can find on the island to take out the walking dead, but with thousands of weapons ranging from broomsticks and cleavers to heavy rifles and weapon customisation, so there are a number of inventive means to remove the head or destroy the brain.
With its open world style of play, a non-linear storyline, and a location rarely seen in the genre, Dead Island looks set to be the zombie title to die for.
Zombie in Reverse
The game grabbed everyones attention with a trailer that went on to win a Gold award at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
Book of Blood
Dead Island is also being turned into a novel by Mark Morris. The author is best known for novels based on Doctor Who and Torchwood alongside a range of his own horror books.
Consumers can get the Bloodbath Arena DLC if they pre-order the game from a range of retailers. This arena features endless waves of enemies and new weapons.
