Elite Beat Agents

Ben Parfitt
After certain events take an unspecified turn for the worse on a fantastical version of Earth, the world’s finest rhythm based combat unit, the Elite Beat Agents are summoned to rescue the day using their musical skills. As MCV understands, the UK military’s equivalent unit, the SBS (Special Beat-boxing Service) was busy supporting a melodic revolution in Central America at the time.

The game features 19 different songs from artists such as Sum 41, Avril Lavigne, Freddie Mercury, Ashlee Simpson, David Bowie and Destiny’s Child. Players control the agents by tapping the touch screen in time with the music. If they hit certain markers in time then the ‘elite-o-meter’ is topped up – however if it falls empty, then the agent fails the mission. Three types of markers must be looked out for:  Hit Markers, Phrase Markers and Spin Markers.

In single player mode each level contains a different soundtrack, while the difficulty of that level is denoted by which Agent comes to the rescue. If players are particularly proud of their performance they can view and save the routine in order to gloat to friends – a pool of which they may find becoming increasingly shallow if they do so too often.

In multiplayer mode up to four players can plug into the handheld’s local wireless connection to challenge each other to a head-to-head dance off, Run DMC style. Whoever finishes with the fullest elite-o-meter when the song ends is the winner.

Those with game cards can also save their best performance and use it to set the standard for an opponent.
