THERE IS arguably no better title that encapsulates Sony’s ‘Play, Create, Share’ tagline than LittleBigPlanet.
The imaginative PS3 platformer went on sale two years ago to widespread critical acclaim and has gone on to sell more than 4m copies worldwide.
It currently has one of the top Metacritic scores with 95 per cent and has won over 80 accolades including the BAFTA Children’s Award 2009.
Now Sony is releasing a sequel which promises to add bundles of new content, as well as backwards compatibility with DLC and millions of free custom-made levels from the original.
LittleBigPlanet 2’s most notable addition is its new ‘Create’ mode which allows users to make better levels. They can even create completely new games spanning a variety of genres, from shooters to puzzle games and racers.
LittleBigPlanet 2 boasts 40 new story levels across six themes. These can be played alone or with friends either offline or online.
The star of the show Sackboy returns – this time around he can use new tools such as a grapple hook to swing across gaps and power gloves to throw large objects.
Players can use an in-game cut-scene maker to create their own movie sequences, record narrative voiceovers and upload them online.
With an upgraded engine, new in-game materials such as glass, metal and cardboard, LittleBigPlanet 2 is bursting with even more possibilities than its near-limitless original, making it an essential New Year purchase for many.
A PlayStation Move-compatible demo comes with the game, featuring 10 motion-based levels. Titled Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves, the demo is also available to download on PSN, with PS Plus subscribers granted free access.
Sony is launching its own LittleBigPlanet 2 social network at www.lbp.me when the game is released. Every created level will get its own web page and users will be able to queue up new worlds to download.
Building on the widespread appeal of LittleBigPlanet, Sony launched a line of branded merchandise last year including figures, keyrings, mugs, bags, t-shirts and hoodies. The margin makers feature Sackboy himself.
The LittleBigPlanet 2 Collector’s Edition comes in steel packaging and a transparent cover. It includes exclusive DLC, five PSN avatars and seven Sackboy costumes such as a Toy Story 3 alien getup and The Muppets outfit.
