Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D

Metal Gear is the No.1 stealth video game franchise, having sold over 30m copies worldwide.

The series has changed dramatically in the space of its 25-year history, and now Konami is showing off one of its much-loved releases specially recreated for the Nintendo 3DS.

With Metal Gear Solid HD Collection going on sale last month, newer fans who weren’t familiar with the older games will want a look in. And of course, die-hard fans and 3DS owners will also want a slice of the action, especially as this is the first Metal Gear release on the Nintendo handheld.

Old Snake

Jungle-based survival epic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was released on PS2 in 2004 to rave reviews. The game is set during the Cold War of the ‘60s, where protagonist Snake must infiltrate a Soviet jungle and rescue a kidnapped scientist.

Players must use stealth skills to blend in with the foliage of the jungle and, like other titles in the popular series, sneak past guards to progress. They can also kill creatures in the game world and store them as rations, which can be used to boost Snake’s stamina. Jungle inhabitants gamers will come across include snakes, parrots, rats, squirrels, bats and frogs.

Snake Eater 3D also comes with a host of extras for the 3DS. Gamers can use the handheld’s camera to take pictures of textures, which Snake can add to his camouflage suit to help him blend in with his environment, whether it’s a brick-coloured building or muddy outdoor area.

The 3DS’ bottom screen displays Snake’s inventory, while the top screen shows the third-person action. Gamers can even tilt the 3DS to balance on narrow ledges and attach the Circle Pad Pro accessory to make shooting even easier.

Solid sales

The originalSnake Eater on PlayStation 2 has sold around 4m copies worldwide since it arrived in 2004. It is loved by critics, with a 91 Metacritic score.

Demo eater

A Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D demo hit the 3DS eShop last month, giving players the chance to try out Konami’s stealth action game for free ahead of release.
