RECOMMENDED: Spec Ops: The Line

The first Spec Ops title developed by Yager Development (ninth in a franchise that started in 1998), is based on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness – the novel that explores war and madness.

Spec Ops:?The Line begins six months after a sandstorm has left Dubai buried like a dad on a beach, transforming the home for the perversely rich into a playground for the richly perverse.

After dangerous outlaws overrun the spectacular city, US Army Colonel John Konrad and his 33nd Infantry are presumed dead after staying behind to help locals.

Players are thrust into the action when a distress signal is picked up months after their disappearance, sending a three-man team led by Captain Walker into the heart of the city on a rescue mission.

Once inside the sandy maze, players will have to battle against the hostile locals, the volatile environment and the onset of madness.

The game comes complete with a range of team based multiplayer modes allowing players join either the Damned or the Exiles faction and take to the sandbox city with friends in a variety of multiplayer modes, unique to the game’s desert setting.

“Strong narrative-driven gameplay is a solid unique selling point of our games, and Spec Ops: The Line is no different, offering players a deep and engaging narrative that focuses on what happens to good men in an increasingly bad situation” says 2K’s UK PR executive Matt Roche.

“We feel that this combined with the unique setting of a sandstorm-ravaged Dubai as well as the solid third-person shooter gameplay mechanics will deliver a different experience from the conventional war shooter and one which fans of the shooter genre will want to experience.”

SPECS & SOCCER
2K Games will be advertising Spec Ops: The Line with a heavyweight TV campaign, targeting the obvious audience of males aged 18 to 34. Standout spots have been secured during key Euro 2012 matches.

THE LINE ONLINE
Online promotions kicked off earlier this month, focusing on specialist gaming websites. Spec Ops will also benefit from a number of homepage takeovers, raising awareness of the game and its June 29th launch date.

PAST OPS
The first Spec Ops was released for PC way back in 1998, and was quickly followed by two expansions. In 2000 the series transferred to consoles with the PSone shooter Spec Ops II: Green Berets.

CLASSIFIED OPS
The franchise has not been seen since 2002’s PSone title Spec Ops: Airborne Commando. Once a new Spec Ops game was in development at Rockstar Vancouver. But the project was canned.
