Ryse: Son of Rome - Retail Essentials

MCV takes a look at Crytek's historical fighting game that pits the player against the barbarian hordes.

Ryse: Son of Rome comes to stores on November 22nd along with the Xbox One.

Ryse:Son of Rome is a cinematic action game from developer Crytek. Players take the role of Marius Titus – a Roman general who joined the legions to avenge the death of his family at the hands of barbarian bandits.

The game features bloody, brutal and intense combat and Marcus must use his sword and shield to deal damage upon his foes. Usually gamers will have to deal with multiple opponents, so need to be aware of being flanked, and can perform executions to finish off enemies.

Gamers generally are playing as part of a squad – at any time fans can bring their squad mates together to advance as one unit towards their enemies. They can also form their unit into a shielded tortoise formation, protecting all involved from arrows and other attacks.

Ryse uses the new Xbox One version of the CryEngine. Battles feel suitably epic, with up to 100 characters on-screen at any given time. The engine also generates realistic blood splatters and sound effects.

There is also a co-op multiplayer mode – gamers are thrust into the Coliseum and have to fight against waves of ever-changing enemies in the gladitoral games while thousands of spectators roar.

Microsoft’s other devices come into play. Consumers can control their unit via Kinect using voice commands and can play on the go with Deep Link on SmartGlass. Gamers can also share footage and manage their character’s inventory and upgrades. In addition, the app will provide hints and video-walkthroughs in case consumers get stuck.

Ryse: Son of Rome presents a cinematic recreation of the Roman Empire in breathtaking detail – from the northern reaches of Britannia, to the coliseum and Rome itself.

The brutality and intensity of Roman warfare are brought to life in detail, thrusting the player into combat and seeing the emotion on their opponent’s face.
