SSX has established itself as the go-to gaming series for snowboarding enthusiasts ever since the franchise first sent players to the slopes in 2000.

Now, in its first console outing since 2007’s SSX Blur for the Wii, the series is reinventing itself with its PS3 and 360 debut.

“It’s been a long time since SSX has been out,” brand communications boss Duke Indrasigamany tells MCV.

“There’s a lot of old school fans out there. Hopefully we’re opening a new generation of gamers’ eyes to a series that really dominated on PSone and PS2.

“We want to deliver the best SSX experience that has been made. We’ve got a high bar to compete against, as Tricky is a real fan favourite, and SSX 3 was great too, but I think because there hasn’t been a game like this in so long, it’s very unfamiliar to many consumers.”

Players can step into the boots of franchise favourites Elise, Kaori and Mac, as well as a range of new boarders including real life snowboarding star Travis Rice. They have to hit the slopes of nine of the most extreme mountain regions ever seen in an SSX title, constructed using real NASA data.

Players are able to traverse the wide open landscapes in adrenaline-fuelled races in ‘Race It’ and rack up gravity-defying tricks in ‘Trick It’. Then there’s the ‘Survive It’ mode, which pits players against the elements in a bid to tackle some of the most dangerous slopes in the world.

Wing suits will help gamers glide across the more dangerous jumps, but they will also have to battle against avalanches, blizzards, dark routes lit only by torches and forests that present snowboarders with the danger of smashing into a tree at high speed.

With new players, slopes and online features, the SSX franchise returns with a bang in March. Expect it to be one of EA’s most exciting new releases of this year’s first quarter.

Also, those who pre-order the title will receive exclusive in-game content including extra snowboards, character attributes and SSX?series mainstay Eddie Wachowski.
