When StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty landed in 2010, it didn’t take long for consumers to embrace it.
The game became the fastest selling strategy title of all time upon its release, selling 1m copies in its first 24 hours with over 8,000 retailers opening their doors at midnight to mark its arrival. It took only a month for the game to reach the 3m copies sold mark.
Blizzard is hoping this new expansion, Heart of the Swarm, captures consumer’s attention to a similar extent.
“For many players, StarCraft II is more than just a game. Players become part of a tight-knit global community united by memorable game experiences, a popular eSport, and a shared cultural identity,” says a Blizzard spokesperson.
“The developers at Blizzard are a part of that community and are excited to deliver an expansion that lives up to the expectations of millions of players around the world.”
HEART OF DARKNESS
StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm continues the story of Sarah Kerrigan as she plots revenge against Arcturus Mengsk, dictator of the Koprulu sector and all-round nasty piece of work.
Players will control the avatar of the zerg as they destroy the enemy using Kerrigan’s psychic abilities.
As well as mass battles involving entire armies, Heart of the Swarm also engages gamers in boss battles featuring Kerrigan herself.
The expansion gives fans the chance to explore new worlds and boasts enhanced matchmaking and social features.
The multiplayer aspect of the game has also been upgraded, with new units available including the tempest, viper and widow mines, and new maps sending consumers to environments including jungles, space stations and icy terrains.
“Blizzard has a long tradition of focusing on quality not only in the game experiences it creates but in the ways it delivers those experiences to players via retail and online channels,” added a Blizzard spokesperson.
“We’re excited to continue thattradition with Heart of the Swarm.”
SPREADING THE SWARM
Significant retail and media campaigns will support the launch of the expansion title. An online campaign featuring cinematic trailers will run in the weeks prior to launch. “This campaign will target Wings of Liberty veterans while exposing the game universe to new players,” says a Blizzard spokesperson.
Blizzard’s eSports partners will be promoting streaming content, show matches, and tournaments with Heart of the Swarm, featuring some of the community’s most highly regarded pro-gamers.
