One of the most popular stories in literature and cinema looks set to be joined by a video game of similar magnitude.
The new third-person action role-playing game from Snowblind Studios uses content from all books and films of theTolkien universe to create a new and original story set in Middle Earth.
Like the Fellowship, the emphasisis is on teamwork. The game features online three-player co-operative play with elves, dwarves and human rangers from around the world. The new trio of Eradan, Andriel and Farin must work together to overthrow Agandaur, Sauron’s Chief Lieutenant in the North.
A host of new characters have been introduced to the ever expanding world of Middle Earth. A Great Eagle named Beleram acts as the fourth and final part of the fellowship, who can be called upon in outdoor environments to assist the players at crucial moments with devastating aerial abilities.
The open-ended narrative and increasing difficulty will encourage multiple playthroughs, with your character file transferable between all single-player, online and split screen modes. The soundtrack includes nineteen new tracks produced by acclaimed video game composer Inon Zur, recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios.
Despite the mass appeal of Lord of the Rings, it’s a mature RPG with tactical gameplay. The game features upgradable weapons and character customisation true to the trilogy whilst appealing to fans of popular fantasy MMORPG titles.
Warner Bros has been targetting Lord of the Rings fans at consumer games show, such as GAMEfest and Eurogamer Expo. The title was also available at last week’s MCM Expo, where the company held a Mastermind of the Rings trivia contest and a cosplay competition.
There will be plenty of traditional marketing to drive War in the North. TV ads will run around shows such as The Walking Dead, Mock The Week and True Blood, while print ads will run in specialist gaming and film press, including Empire and Total Film. Warner has even secured 2m on pack promotions with Southern Fried Chicken Poppets.
