WWE All Stars

Hulk Hogan, The Rock and John Cena might be wrestlers from separate generations but they all have one thing in common – they’re worldwide superstars.

THQ is tapping into this timeless global appeal by putting wrestlers from different time periods into the ring for an epic battle royale. This results in a huge roster of WWE legends and current superstars (see ‘In with the old and in with the new’).

WWE All Stars also promises a fluid new gameplay style with more responsive quick grapples, strong grapples, standing and running attacks, as well as combos. Each WWE legend and superstar has his own signature abilities and finishing moves, bringing their individuality to the game.

There are now three in-game meters for players to keep an eye on – health, signature moves and finisher.

Graphics have also been overhauled, promising a more colourful offering rather than straight up realism. All of this represents THQ’s emphasis on fun and imagination in the title.

Of course, the publisher already has a highly impressive back catalogue of wrestling titles under its belt, putting WWE All Stars in good stead ahead of its April release.

These include the officially licensed annual WWE Smackdown vs Raw multiplatform games, classic Nintendo 64 titles and popular Smackdown PlayStation games.

Wrestle mania

WWE All Stars features a range of modes such as ‘Path of Champions’ which allows players to challenge the Undertaker, Randy Orton and the Degeneration-X tag team for championship belts. Then there’s the game’s big selling point – ‘Fantasy Warfare’.

In this mode, WWE legends are pitted against current superstars, with matches such as The Big Show against Andre the Giant, and Stone Cold Steve Austin vs CM Punk.

Players can create their own custom matches and fight against others online, giving WWE All Stars strong replay value. With the official licence, exciting gameplay and creative mixture of old and new wrestlers, WWE All Stars is looking like it will be this year’s biggest wrestling game.

Mad Catz has produced a line of official WWE All Stars BrawlStick and BrawlPad accessories for Xbox 360 and PS3. These are similar to the firm’s previous Street Fighter IV accessories and are well suited to fighting games.
