250 layoffs made as Disney’s games retreat continues

Further layoffs have been made across Disney’s gaming division with 250 jobs cut.

The employees laid off were all from the company’s consumer products and digital unit, including a number of developers at various studios. The New York Times, spotted by GamesIndustry, reports that the Bellevue, Washington team behind Marvel: Avengers Alliance was among those hit.

Earlier this month, Disney announced it would be closing the title and its sequel with the intention of putting more resources into new games.

The new follows the company’s exit from the console gaming space, with 300 jobs lost as it shut down the Disney Infinity studio Avalanche and scrapped the franchise. It has since been licensing out properties, most particularly Star Wars, to other games firms such as EA.

Some of the layoffs were the result of Disney’s decision to merge its consumer products and interactive media businesses last year.
