Activision goes legal on ModernWarfare3.com

Clever marketing move from a rival? Pet project of a Battlefield fan? The idle amusement of a trouble maker? Whoever’s behind the ModernWarfare3.com domain ‘scandal’, they’ve clearly irritated Activision.

Fusible.com reports that the publisher has filed an official domain name dispute with the National Arbitration Forum over the website, which was widely reported online last week.

The documents, which can be read here, say that the still mysterious domain holder will have 20 days to respond once they receive a copy of the official complaint.

It is also suggested that they seek legal assistance. Legal fees to date have hit $2,600.

The thrust of Activision’s argument is that such is the level of success enjoyed by the Modern Warfare franchise that it effectively owns the right to be the sole representative of it.

It adds that whomever the domain owner may be, they cannot possibly argue any form of rightful ownership.

And owing to the manner in which the legal documents have now been published on ModernWarfare3.com, it’s probably safe to say it’s not EA behind all this.
