Amazon India launches video games section

Amazon India, which is gradually expanding its product offerings, has now added a video games section.

Amazon is still in the process of integrating the games category into the website, so at the time of writing, you can’t browse to the games section from the homepage, but it can be accessed through this link.

Due to Indian govenment restrictions, Amazon.in doesn’t sell products directly, but operates solely on the marketplace model. Games software isn’t listed on the site just yet, but consoles and peripherals are now available.

Amazon is one of the biggest players in games retail globally and having only launched its India website this June, it has already earned a reputation for timely deliveries and quality customer support.

It’s entry into the gaming space will most certainly offer stiff competition to specialist retailers and the likes of Flipkart.com, which is currently the country’s biggest games retailer and operates both directly and through its marketplace model.

Amazon’s move into gaming is also encouraging for independent retailers, who can partner with Amazon to reach a broader customer base and take advantage of its logistics network.

Looking at the vendors in the games section, it already includes major players like Croma and Planet M, as well as several independents, and more are likely to be added in the coming days.

It’s unclear when Amazon.in will begin offering games software, but that’s when things will really start getting interesting. We’ve written to Amazon for an official comment, and we’ll update this story as we know more.
