Apple has unveiled the latest iteration of its popular smartphone series the iPhone 5.
Revealing the mobile at a special press conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook said it was the ‘most beautiful product” it had ever made.
The iPhone 5 will be released on September 21st and will cost $199 for the 16gb version, and $299 for the 32gb edition.
It will be 7.6mm thin, 18 per cent thinner than the iPhone 4S and Cook said it would be made entirely made from glass and aluminium.
The phone will feature the same retina display as the previous iPhone, at 326 pixels per inch, and will include a 16:9 aspect ratio. It will also feature 44 per cent more colour saturation that the 4S display.
The new display size is different form its predecessor, meaning developers will likely have to rescale their games for the new device to match the new specifications.
The iPhone 5 will also weigh 112 grams, 20 per cent lighter than the 4S.
As well as a raft of enhancements, the iPhone 5 will use a new A6 chip, instead of the A5 as used in the 4S and iPad 2.
Cook said the A6 had a CPU twice as fast as its predecessor and will include graphics running 2x as fast.
To demonstrate its potential, EA showed off Real Racing 3 with a gleaming Porsche GT3, which prompted excited reactions from the assembled audience.
A new feature of Game Centre was also shown off: ‘timeshifted multiplayer’, which is presumably a a form of asynchronous multiplayer.
The iPhone 5 will feature the all new iOS 6.
Battery life for the mobile meanwhile whill include up to ten hours for Wi-Fi browsing and video, although Cook did not state how long it would last running various games and apps.
The camera included with the smartpone will have an 8 meapixel sensor, a 3264 x 2448 display and f/2.4 aperture potential, whilst the HD camera will display in 1080p.
The iPhone 5 will appear in both black and white cases.
