New operating system features extra dev tools GamePlayKit, ReplayKit and Model I/O

Apple unveils iPhone 6s and iOS 9

Apple has unveiled a new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus dated for release in just two weeks.

The new generation of smartphones feature 3D touch, which can sense how much pressure the user is using when tapping. This offers new ways to interact with the smartphone, such as pressing lightly to peek at a photo or web page from a different page without losing your place, or using more force to fully view the content.

The iPhone 6s is built on the 64-bit A9 chip. Apple claims it features a 70 per cent faster CPU and 90 per cent faster GPU performance than the A8. The M9, Apple’s new motion co-processor, is also embedded into the A9 to enable more features to run at the same time using less power.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will be released in the UK, US and some European countries from September 25th. Pre-orders will begin on September 12th.

During yesterday’s press event, Apple also announced its new mobile operating system, iOS 9.

As well as advancements to SceneKit, SpriteKit and Metal, iOS 9 also brings with it new game development-related frameworks.

GamePlayKit lets developers create complex rule-based games. ReplayKit can be used to record videos of game content and allows the user to edit it within the app and share it online. Model I/O meanwhile provides physically-based materials, models and lighting for SceneKit, GamePlayKit and Metal that can be integrated into a game.

iOS 9 will be available to users for free from September 16th on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

You can find more information about the new tools on the Apple developer website.

Apple has also announced the new Apple TV. You can find more details on the set-top box and Apple’s plans for gaming in the living room here.
