Mobile media firm Handmark set to buy British smartphone and iPod game specialist

Astraware acquired

Mobile content firm Handmark has announced a definitive agreement to buy UK mobile game studio Astraware.

The acquisition will help Handmark boost its portfolio of games for smartphones. Handmark publishes portable versions of Tetris and Scrabble – while Astraware’s experience streteches across a variety of handheld, mobile and PDA platforms.

The firm has also worked on games for Apple’s iPod, including the port of PopCap’s Bejewelled, and has transferred a number of PopCap games to mobile.

"For over 10 years, Astraware has successfully created some of the best mobile gaming brands in the industry, building a company through unparalleled focus on quality and customer satisfaction," said Howard Tomlinson, co-founder and CEO of Astraware.

"I am excited to be joining forces with Handmark, and we will be able to focus our experience and talent on creating games across more platforms, and together we will become one of the most powerful forces in the mobile gaming industry."

Paul Reddick, Handmark CEO, added: "We recognize the genius of the mobile gaming pioneers who created Astraware and welcome them to the Handmark family. We share a passion for delivering superior mobile experiences."
