Asteroids, one of the most iconic arcade games of all time, has undergone one hell of a makeover.
As part of its ongoing rebirth as a modern entertainment company, Atari has announced a brand new version of the classic title that’s nothing like its predecessor.
Asteroids: Outpost is an "open world, sandbox-style, survival experience", according to the publisher, in which players will be tasked to mine resources and build and defend bases. The game will be set on a massive asteroid, with smaller ones raining down on the map. Players must shoot these falling projectiles to release the resources contained inside.
Outpost is being developed by Salty Games for PC, although there’s no word on a release date yet.
"Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari’s portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we’re looking forward to ushering the game into today’s digital gaming era," said Atari CEO Fred Chesnais.
"We’re paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid-blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and game player. Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs."
