Autodesk launches cloud-based 3D Character Generator

Autodesk has added to its suite of game development tool offerings with the release of a new cloud-based 3D Character Generator.

The web-based tool enables developers to create customised, rigged and ready-to-animate 3D characters, which can then be exported to populate game scenes or for generating models for pre-visualisation.

The character generator includes a library of pre-built male, female and creature models, which can also be altered. The tool also comes with a selection of skin, eye and hair colours, as well as ready-made clothing and shoes.

Autodesk subscription members and rental customers will also receive access to a body, bone and blend-shape facial rig collection, compatible with the firm’s HumanIK middleware.

Each character download will cost a set number of ‘cloud credits’, and can be exported to tools such as Maya, Maya LT and 3ds Max for further customisation and animation.

Students and educators are being offered free access to the Character Generator, and a lighter, low resolution version is also available to try at no cost.
