Blizzard: ‘Diablo III feels better with 360 controller’

Highly anticipated PC RPG Diablo III plays even better” with an Xbox 360 controller, says the game’s director.

Jay Wilson told PC Gamer about the challenges Blizzard faces of working on its first console port, as well as its advantages.

One of the reasons why we’re exploring the idea of a console version of Diablo III is because we feel the controls and the style of the game lend themselves to a console.

With some of our early experiments in putting a direct control scheme into the game via a 360-like analogue controller, I’ve though, ‘Oh this feels even better with direct control.’”

Blizzard previously said it is very serious about bringing Diablo to consoles”. The developer has previously only worked on PC games such as World of Warcraft and StarCraft II.

We don’t see ourselves as a PC developer – we see ourselves as a game developer,” added Wilson. It’s just that the games that we wanted to make suit the PC platform.

We don’t believe you can make a StarCraft-style real-time strategy game and make it great on a console. We do believe you could make an RTS that would be on a console, but we would have (to have) that idea, and that spark and passion to make it.”

The news comes after Blizzard kicked off closed beta testing for Diablo III. Earlier this year the developer confirmed Diablo III will allow gamers to buy and sell in-game items for real money.

A firm release date for the game has not yet been announced.
