“I’m wrestling with some insecurity issues in my life but thank you for playing with me”

Blizzard encourages sportsmanship by trolling mocking Overwatch winners

There is little to nothing developers can do to control how their players behave towards each other, but Blizzard has found a great way to try and lower the amount of disrepect in the Overwatch community.

The developer noticed that several particularly poor winners would rub their victory in their opponent’s face with the message “gg ez” – standing for “Good game. Easy”, i.e. that was too easy. Such mockery will no longer go unpunished, Eurogamer reports.

Blizzard has added a filter that will replace “gg ez” with a one of several alternative phrases, all designed to turn the tables on players with poor attitude.

The phrases include:

  • I feel very, very small… please hold me…
  • It’s past my bedtime. Please don’t tell my mommy.
  • I’m trying to be a nicer person. It’s hard, but I’m trying, guys.
  • Mommy says people my age shouldn’t suck their thumbs.
  • Ah shucks… you guys are the best.
  • Gee whiz! That was fun. Good playing!
  • Wishing you all the best.
  • It was an honor to play with you all. Thank you.
  • (And Develop’s personal favourite) I’m wrestling with some insecurity issues in my life but thank you for playing with me.

It’s a smart idea and one other developers could build on when trying to bring a little more dignity to their multiplayer community.
