Work restarts on MMO as developer makes large design and technology changes to game

Blizzard reboots Project Titan with 30 devs

Blizzard has reduced the number of developers working on its long in development MMO Project Titan to 30 as work starts over on the title.

As reported by Venturebeat, the MMO previously had a team of 100 developers working on the project, but a source “familiar with that matter” has said 70 staff are now being reassigned to other work at the studio.

Work is now starting over on the game, and it is no longer expected to be released till 2016 at the earliest.

“We’ve always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception,” read a statement from Blizzard spokesman Shon Damron.

“We’ve come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game. We’re using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes. Note that we haven’t announced any dates for the MMO.”

Last year Blizzard chief creative officer Rob Pardo said Titan had been in “core development” for around four years with over 100 developers working on the project, but said the game wasn’t close to being released.

While little has been revealed on Project Titan, last year a source connected to the matter told Develop that Blizzard was working on a free-to-play title, which could perhaps be Titan.

Blizzard’s other MMO, World of Warcraft, was released in 2004, but still boasts over eight million subscribers.

The title appears to be gradually losing some steam though as the number of subscriptions continues to drop off, having lost over one million players in the first three months of 2013.
