Blockbuster’s UK operations are not in the process of being sold, the firm has told MCV.
MCV was contacted yesterday with reports that Blockbuster’s global parent – US-based satellite broadcaster Dish Network – was finalising the sale of the company’s 550 UK stores to one of two interested parties.
But although Blockbuster’s UK team acknowledges that this story ‘has been going round the houses for quite a while’ it insists ‘there is no truth in them at all.’
Blockbuster was sold to Dish Network in 2011 after its US operation went into administration. Blockbuster’s UK business operates separately to its US parent, but it is still owned by Dish.
The UK-arm of the rental giant has drastically improved its games offering this year in a bid to grow market share. The firm told MCV earlier in the year that it has highlighted an opportunity following the closure of 277 GAME stores.
