4m pre-orders and counting for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have already broken Apple records.

The company has said that in their first 24 hours of availability on pre-order over 4m handsets had already been sold – a number that exceeds the initial pre-order supply” and breaks previous Apple records.

All of which means of course that despite the fact the phones officially go on sale this Friday (September 19th), many who have pre-ordered are already facing a wait stretching into next month to get their hands on the devices.

Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday,” said Apple chief executive Tim Cook.

Many consumers were left frustrated on Friday when websites for operators such as EE were forced offline for virtually the entire day as high traffic numbers forced servers to grind to a halt. Some units will be available at retail this Friday, but probably only for those who turn up very early.

The iPhone 5S and 5C sold 9m handsets in their opening weekend of availability last year – a number you can expect the iPhone 6 to beat.
