Amazon launches "the largest video games store in India"

Amazon.in has officially launched what it calls India’s largest video games store.

As we’d reported earlier, the retailer had a soft launch of its games section in December that only included consoles and peripherals, but now also includes games across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and PC platforms. Also, the video games section is now prominently visible on the homepage.

We are very happy to launch our much-awaited video games store with the largest selection in India. This is an exciting time for the category with Sony’s PlayStation 4 making its debut in the market and Xbox One being eagerly awaited. And with preorders for new releases, next-day guaranteed delivery to several cities on many of the current bestsellers, and Amazon’s trustworthy and convenient shopping experience, there hasn’t been a more exciting time for gamers in India,” says Samir Kumar, Amazon India’s director of category management

Amazon currently lists over 2,600 gaming hardware and peripherals, and over 2,000 games.

The retailer operates purely through a marketplace model, so it doesn’t sell gaming products directly, but through third-parties, which currently include the likes of Croma, Games The Shop, Intencity, Planet M and Nextworld.

However, Medianama reports that Amazon is aggressively lobbying with the US government to push for FDI in e-commerce retail in India, which would allow it to sell directly to customers.

Amazon is also offering a next-day delivery option in most cities for Amazon-fulfilled orders at a cost of Rs 99, and will also hold preorders for future releases.
