Blockbuster backs Xbox One – despite rental block

UK rental and retail chain Blockbuster has said it is happy to support Microsoft’s new console, even though it prevents the use of rented games.

In the still-confusing clarifications released last week, Microsoft said that ‘loaning and renting games’ will not be possible at the launch of Xbox One.

However, Blockbuster has said it will still stock the new console, even claiming the device has broken the chain’s pre-order records.

"We are delighted to be a key launch partner for Microsoft and are working very closely with them to ensure the success of the Xbox One at Blockbuster," head of product James Morton told MCV.

"Customer reaction in-store and online has been extremely positive, which has been reflected in our record-breaking pre-order campaign for this highly anticipated console.

"We are really pleased with the continued development of the games business at Blockbuster and will have further announcements following discussions with Microsoft at E3."

Microsoft’s DRM policies, which limit or prevent the use of second hand games, have been met with considerable backlash from the Xbox community. No less than two pressure groups, Xbox Shun! and #XBOXONENoDRM, are actively campaigning to boycott the Xbox One.

Microsoft’s E3 press conference starts in less than two hours, but it’s not certain whether it will offer further clarification about the console’s DRM. What is certain, however, is you can watch it here at MCVuk.com.
