E3 2012: Gaikai strikes Samsung Smart TV deal

Gaikai is to provide cloud gaming services to owners of Samsung’s internet connected Smart TVs.

Samsung is currently the world’s largest manufacturer of digital TVs, giving Gaikai instant access to millions of consumers around the world.

Owners of suitable devices will see the functionality arrive in the next few weeks. It will be compatible with Samsung’s 7000 series and all subsequent Smart TV models.

Games will play directly through their sets without the need for any dedicated hardware or software installation.

Of course, the news we’ve really been waited for is the anticipated tie-up with Sony, of which there was no mention in Sony’s press conference.

Gaikai currently has agreements in place with YouTube and Facebook, as well as retailers such as Walmart and GAME. The company refused to comment on the speculation at its E3 press event.

"We’ve talked to all of [the console makers]. Literally all of them,” Gaikai CEO David Perry told Gamasutra. I wouldn’t want to be a console without cloud gaming. Let’s put it that way. I think that all of them are going to need this technology."
