PSP disc format backed for future dev opportunities

GDC: Sony claims UMD is ‘alive and well’

Sony stated its intentions to continue with the UMD platform at a GDC session last week.

While discussing the marketplace advantages of Playstation platforms with indie studios, the company said that PSP UMD is “alive and well”, and assured that titles will continue to be published on disc as well as through the Playstation Network store.

Since its North American release in 2005, PSP has pushed 60 million units worldwide. With the release of the UMD drive-free PSPgo last October, Sony has stated its intention to remain committed to both system versions with a “dual platform strategy”.
