Gran Turismo 6 confirmed for PS3 this year; to feature 1,200 cars

Gran Turismo 6 is official. Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi announced the game today at the franchise’s 15th anniversary celebrations at the Silverstone circuit in the UK.

The game is headed to the PS3 and will pack in 1,200 cars; that’s GT5’s 1,000 and 200 new ones.

The Silverstone circuit will feature in the series for the first time in GT6, and overall, the game will feature 71 track layouts across 33 locations. Additionally, a new course maker will be included spanning "several tens of square kilometers".

GT6 will boast a completely new physics engine, including new suspension and tyre models. Polyphony has entered into a tech partnership with Yokohama and KW Auto.

The game will also, in some capacity, support connectivity with smartphones, tablets and PC.

It is said that GT6 will have a strong focus on downloadable content and will be supported long after its release.

The game is set for release this holiday season, with more details to be revealed at E3 and Gamescom.
