HMV won’t accept Mercenaries trade-ins

UK entertainment retailer HMV will not be accepting trade-in copies of 3DS title Resident Evil: Mercenaries, which is released in the UK this Friday.

PR boss Gennaro Castaldo told VG247 that the decision was made avoid any potential customer disappointment for those purchasing a pre-owned version”.

However, a spokesperson for GAME and Gamestation has told MCV that it doesn’t currently have any plans to veto trade-ins on the title.

The furore looked like it had passed this morning when global games giant GameStop reversed a decision to block Mercenaries trade-ins.

On Monday a Capcom rep told MCV: "The game’s value at second hand in the UK is not affected by whether or not the game can have its data reset. Customers in the UK will not experience a reduced second-hand value should they wish to trade in their purchase."

It has also denied claims that the decision to prevent data wiping on the game was linked to a desire to stop it being sold on a pre-owned basis.
