League of Legends sees another massive player spike

League of Legends developer Riot Games has announced its MOBA sensation is now peaking in excess of 5m concurrent players.

PCGamersN reports Riot’s latest figure dwarfs Steam’s biggest offering, Dota 2, at just 300k concurrent players.

In fact, Steam itself just recently hit 6.6m concurrent users; so the eSports hit is nearly on par with Steam’s general usage.

The latest milestone is even more impressive when considering the game boasted only 3m as its high mark in October 2012 – when, at the time, it was proclaimed by a Riot infographic to be the most played video game in the world.”

Please have mercy on our servers,” was one Riot rep’s simple, desperate plea to the game’s community.
