MS: Crackdown and Halo hitting mobile

Platform holder Microsoft has opened Gamescom 2010 with a serious statement of intent about what appear to be its very real ambitions for gaming on Windows Phone 7.

We’ve been waiting years for the announcement of a portable Xbox… and here it is. In today’s market Microsoft was always unlikely to once again try its hand at the dedicated hardware route, so brining Xbox into the Windows Mobile fold is a very logical step – and a low risk one that can guarantee a very large potential userbase.

A new Crackdown title and Bungie’s Halo Waypoint hub are amongst two of the 63 confirmed titles for WP7 devices this Christmas, as well as a swathe of integrated Xbox Live functionality including game demos, online leaderboards and multiplayer, Achievements, messaging and avatars.

Windows Phone 7 is the launch of a major gaming platform for Microsoft,” general manager of mobile gaming for MGS Matt Booty stated. Just like we’ve done with Xbox 360, our charter is to push the envelope and deliver definitive games that maximise the platform. We will have an incredible line-up of MGS titles, and that’s just the beginning.”

Of the rest of the launch software are some very impressive titles that have already enjoyed great success on iPhone including Flight Control, Splinter Cell, Jet Car Stunts, De Blob, Assassin’s Creed, THQ’s pair of Star Wars iPhone games, Mini Squadron, Glyder 2

Sister-site ME points out that EA seems to be completely MIA from the line-up, which is particularly odd considering both its close ties to Microsoft’s console business and the huge resources it has poured into portable gaming on iPhone. Perhaps this will be explained at EA’s conference later today.
