New 3DS gets SNES downloads and special edition console

Nintendo has confirmed the long-awaited arrival of SNES games on the 3DS Virtual Console.

There’s a catch though – the downloads will only be available to those with the latest generation New 3DS and New 3DS XL. There’s no cross-buy support, either, so even if you’ve already purchased the games on Wii U, you’ll need to fork out again for the handheld versions.

A number of titles have been confirmed so far, with Super Mario World and Earthbound the first up. They will be followed next week by The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past and Super Metroid. Further down the line are F-Zero, Super Mario Kart and both Donkey Kong Country games.

Also confirmed, for Japan at least, is a special edition SNES-themed version of the New 3DS XL. As us Europeans enjoyed the same SNES design as the Japanese, there may be hope of it making its way to these shores. US gamers, meanwhile, face a more uncertain wait thanks to the retro console’s unusual styling in their territory.
