Pokemon is getting its first ever Super Bowl ad

Viewers of this year’s Super Bowl will for the first time be greeted with a Pokemon ad.

The ad was shot in Rio de Janeiro and celebrates the millions of Pokmon fans around the world”. The short lasts 30 seconds, with an extended version then available online. It will be aired at the beginning of the third quarter – which in football – sorry, ‘soccer’ – terms is the third half time.

For 20 years, the Pokmon world has inspired fans to train hard and have fun,” Pokemon Company’s senior director of consumer marketing J C Smith said. This ad is reflective of that passion, and I can’t think of a bigger stage to share this story than the Super Bowl.”

The Super Bowl takes place on February 7th. It’s the 50th Super Bowl, no less, and sees the Carolina Panthers take on the Denver Broncos.

2016 is the 20-year anniversary of Pokemon. Throughout that time it has sold in the region of 275m games and 21.5bn trading cards.

The next question is which of the big smartphone game companies will pay to have the big half Super Bowl time ad? Our money’s on Clash of Clans as we saw a huge ad for that on the side of the London IMAX at the weekend and we keep seeing Christoph Waltz talking about it on the tele.
