But no news on launch date for hardware

Project Morpheus renamed PlayStation VR

Sony’s virtual reality headset Project Morpheus has been renamed as PlayStation VR.

The rebranding was announced during the Tokyo Game Show by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia president Atsushi Morita.

There’s still no confirmed release date for the headset, though it’s expected early next year.

In a statement after the event, Sony’s Masayasu Ito said the company was still refining the hardware and working with first and third-party developers to bring games to the headset.

“The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience,” said Ito.

“We will continue to refine the hardware from various aspects, while working alongside third-party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, in order to bring content that deliver exciting experiences only made possible with VR.”
