January marked another sales victory in the US for Sony’s PS4, according to NPD data.
VentureBeat reports that PS4 enjoyed another sales win over Xbox One. Microsoft’s machine only managed to outsell Sony’s in two of 2015’s months – April and October. And that’s despite some heavy discounting on Xbox One.
NPD added that current gen consoles – PS4, Xbox One and Wii U – accounted for 96 per cent of hardware sales in the period, up from 84 per cent the January before.
The overall physical video games market was down four per cent year-on-year, however, reaching $605.2m. The dwindling sales of last-gen machines were pegged as the main culprit, although both PS4 and Xbox One sales also fell by a combined eight per cent. Total hardware sales fell 15 per cent to $157m.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III was the best-selling game of the month, followed by Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K16, Star Wars: Battlefront and Fallout 4. The only new entry in the January Top Ten was LEGO Marvel Avengers in ninth.
VentureBeat also noted that, in the case of the latter title, it’s the first time a child-focused franchise has sold better on PS4 than Xbox One in the US in its first month.
It’s also the third consecutive January that GTA V was a Top Five title.
