PSN sales of Retro City Rampage outpace Steam and Xbox Live

Brian Provinciano’s indie hit Retro City Rampage has enjoyed more success on PSN than any other digital platform.

Of course, there’s no reason why it should not – but in an age where we’re constantly told of the brilliance of Steam and the financial success of Xbox Live, the news should give some food for thought.

Eurogamer reports that even sales of the game on PlayStation Vita in isolation outstripped the Xbox Live version. XBLA sales also lag behind Steam purchases, too.

Plus, before the smartarses chime in – these numbers exclude any copies of the game downloaded as part of its inclusion in PlayStation Plus. Factor in those downloads and its success becomes ever more stark.

Not surprisingly the experience has left the game’s developer Brian Provinciano with little of good to say about Microsoft’s service.

"Two bouts of six plus months of pitching, paperwork, negotiation just to get onto XBLA. It’s absurd. They don’t make it easy," he claimed. "It cost more to do the XBLA version than all other SKUs combined. Made more on all other platforms. I’ll definitely be doing another Vita game!

Nintendo’s great to work with. Both Sony and Nintendo are welcoming to indies."
