Rocket League scores victory as best-selling game on PlayStation Store in 2016

Rocket League was the best-selling game on the PlayStation Store in 2016, Sony has announced. Despite being released in 2015, Psyonix’s sports-action title took the crown on both the European and US charts, beating games such as Battlefield 1, FIFA 17 and the PS4 version of Minecraft to the number one spot.

In Europe, FIFA 17 came in second, but a surprise twist saw the PS4 version of Battlefield 4 edging out Battlefield 1 to claim third place. Battlefield 1, meanwhile, settled for fourth, inching ahead of Destiny: Rise of Iron, which charted in fifth.

It was a more positive picture for Battlefield 1 in the US. Here, it was the second-best selling game on the PS Store in the PS4 category. Battlefield 4, meanwhile, was all the way down in eighth. Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition came in third place in the US chart, beating Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Tom Clancy’s The Division.

Despite Rocket League’s success over the course of the year, it was Ark: Survival Evolved that claimed the top spot in December, both in Europe and the US. In Europe, Battlefield 1 came in second, and was followed by Grand Theft Auto V, FIFA 17 and Rocket League.

In the US, Final Fantasy XV was the second best-selling game on the PS Store in December, beating Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto V and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Elsewhere in the US, Job Simulator was the best-selling PSVR game in 2016, followed by Batman: Arkham VR, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, PlayStation VR Worlds and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. Sadly, equivalent data for Europe wasn’t included on Sony’s PlayStation blog.
