Microsoft looks to put early Xbox 360 overheating problems behind it with new hardware

Xbox One designed to be left on for ten years

Microsoft has designed the Xbox One so that it can be left on for up to ten years, according to a report.

The Digital Foundry has claimed “highly placed sources” have said the console has been designed to keep cool so that it can be always-on for the system’s expected ten-year lifecycle.

The idea is likely a key pillar for the firm’s online plans, although it recently took a U-turn on some of its always-on requirements, including daily check-ins for the system.

Microsoft is said to have also taken lengths to make sure the Xbox One runs almost silently in the living room, and a number of developers have said the hardware barely makes any noise in its idle state.

The report stated improved cooling and decreased system noise this was down to a larger fan and better quality heat-sink than seen in current-gen hardware.

Design problems with the original Xbox 360 and the infamous ‘red ring of death’ are said to have cost the company over $1 billion.

Microsoft’s work on overheating issues and noise output from the console should help the company’s plans to take on the living room however. The firm is focused on creating the Xbox as a media entertainment device, rather than just a game console.
